Boost For Berwick Middle School As Local Firm Marks Anniversary
Berwick-based cereal processing firm Silvery Tweed Cereals is continuing its 175th anniversary celebrations with a kitchen makeover at Berwick Middle School.
Silvery Tweed, which supplies many UK household names in the breakfast cereal and bread and bakery sectors from its base on the Tweedside Trading Estate, has funded the school kitchen refurbishment, which includes six new ovens, pasta machines, a barbecue, UV bacteria lights, chopping boards and utensils, nutritional analysis software as well as a new lighting system and painting. The recently opened facility will be known as the Silvery Tweed Technical Centre.
Head Teacher Ben Ryder says, “We’re incredibly grateful to the team at Silvery Tweed for their generous support. The new facilities are superb. We want to see as many people as possible benefit from them and so, as well as being used to enhance teaching, we also have plans to open them up to the wider community: running cookery lessons, for example. They will also be widely used for catering for a range of school events.”
Silvery Tweed Managing Director Bob Gladstone adds, “We’re very keen to promote the importance and development of basic cookery skills and food knowledge among the next generation of food professionals particularly in an age of convenience and fast food.
“Berwick has a strong industrial connection with the food and drink sector, and it is important that we showcase potential career paths to pupils. Hopefully this can be an early part of that journey. It has been a pleasure to support Berwick Middle School and it is fantastic to hear that the new facilities will not only benefit pupils, but also the wider community.”
Silvery Tweed Cereals has been based in the Borders for much of its 175-year history. Throughout 2018, the business has marked its 175th anniversary with a number of activities including a brewery collaboration with Jedburgh beer makers Born in the Borders that saw the creation of two limited edition anniversary beers, and a summer fete for company staff and their families.
The celebrations will continue into 2019 with more events and charitable activities. For more information about Silvery Tweed and its history, visit www.silverytweedcereals.co.uk.
