In 2015 the government increased the recommended daily amount of fibre we should consume from 24g to 30g. Since then, there has been little change in the UK population’s intake, with research showing that only 9% of adults get the correct amount of fibre in their diets.
Government policy has focused on reducing calories, salt and sugar that are in our diets, but there hasn’t been a focus on the nutrients that the human body needs in order for us to live a healthy life.
That is why the Food & Drink Federation (FDF) has introduced its Action on Fibre campaign. Through this industry-led initiative, the FDF and its members, many of whom are customers of Silvery Tweed, are committed to bridging the gap between fibre intakes and dietary recommendations.
Easy ways to increase fibre content
Making small changes to recipes can make quick and easy improvements to the fibre content of products.
Switching to wholegrain flour not only adds flavour and texture to a product but also adds a significant improvement in fibre content. This is due to wholegrains containing the two main types of fibre, insoluble, soluble and also resistant starch.
At Silvery Tweed, our Hi Sol flour has been a core product of our range for many years. This high beta-glucan flour has aided many customers in their desire to add fibre to their finished products.
With our extensive range of products, we can create a bespoke high-fibre bakery blend that includes wholegrain products alongside other ingredients that are naturally high in fibre. Adding pre-biotic fibres, such as chicory root fibre, to this blend can also help achieve high fibre claims.
Seeds may be small, but they are a superfood that packs a fibrous punch. Brown and golden linseed, sunflower, poppy, pumpkin and chia seeds are all the fibre heavyweights of the seed world. These are also highly versatile as they can be used in bakery items and as toppings for snack foods, crackers and breakfast cereals.
Items such as peas, beans, lentils and chickpeas can also be added to baked goods as they add protein as well as boost the fibre content of a product.
Here at Silvery Tweed we fully support the FDF Action on fibre campaign as fibre is an important part of a balanced diet. For creative ideas for high fibre blends, get in touch with our team.
