Clean labelling, health trends, and a focus on natural ingredients are all fuelling demand for seeds in the bakery sector. From bread and baked goods to snack bars and toppers, seeds and grains are being added to more products than ever before.
And it’s a trend that’s showing no signs of slowing. Forecasts indicate that the seed market will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6-7% over the next five years, from US$63 billion (2020) to $US85-90 billion in 2025.
We’ve seen a huge increase in demand for seeds and seeded products in recent years, which is why we chose linseed as one of the first crops to grow at The Mead – the family farm that became part of Silvery Tweed business in the summer - and why we invested £600,000 in a new seed cleaning plant in April this year.
Ensuring product safety
The investment has created a dedicated, allergen-free seed-cleaning plant at our factory, doubling our seed-cleaning capacity and providing complete contamination protection.
The state-of-the-art plant includes a new cascade sieve system to remove unwanted fines and small matter, an in-line fluidised de-stoner, a colour sorter, and full-line dust extraction, all working together to ensure seeds are at the highest purity before blending
Compacting the supply chain
Using the new plant we can clean seeds straight from the farm, which is ideal for our seed crop from The Mead, and for widening the range of raw materials we can now accept and process on-site.
It enables us to process an even wider range of ingredients for customers and allows us to shorten the supply chain and reduce food miles we no longer need to transport uncleaned seeds to a specialist facility before returning them to our factory for blending.
Delivering innovation and quality
Having these specialist cleaning facilities on site also gives us complete control over quality. We achieve 99.98% purity after cleaning and, by cleaning seeds to the highest purity levels, we help our customers deliver an improved finished product. Computerised seed blending means we can combine ingredients to create new and innovative cereal and bakery blends.
If you’d like to come for a look around, we’d be happy to welcome you on-site and discuss your next project. Find out more or get in touch today.
