Hebden Bridge-based brewery, Vocation, has been producing top-quality beers since 2015. Starting as a small hilltop operation, the business now has three tap rooms across the north of England and brews 10 million pints a year, sold to 40 countries.
It goes without saying that when Vocation approached us to fulfil its requirement for a different type of brewery adjunct, we were very happy to oblige.
Adding body and opacity
Known for its passion for accessible, great-tasting beer, as well as for its innovation, Vocation was looking into using wheat flakes instead of malt in its brewing process.
This is because wheat flakes provide a better yield in the brewing process, as well as giving the beer more body a crisper taste and adding opacity.
At Silvery Tweed, we have a variety of cereals that can be used as adjuncts in the brewing process to help enhance the flavour, aroma and colour of the brew. In some instances, these can also be used to bulk out the product for mass production or to increase the alcohol content.
Our grains are steam cooked and/or toasted and then rolled to produce light, consistent cereal flakes that are ideal for many different applications. We can also adjust the qualities of the flakes, such as thickness, colour, size, and moisture, to fit individual requirements.
For Vocation Brewery, we produced wheat flakes that exactly matched what was required to complement its brewing process.
The end product
Vocation has now been using Silvery Tweed wheat flakes for around eight months in its core New England IPAs and hazy ale products, including Hop Skip & Juice, Love & Hate and Crush Hour.
Matt Howgate, Managing Director at Vocation, says, “Going straight to a supplier and using Silvery Tweed Cereals has been a really simple process. We have received a product we love, always delivered on time, and the quality is exceptional.”
Silvery Tweed Managing Director, Bob Gladstone, adds, “The relationship that we are building with Vocation is fantastic and one that we are looking forward to growing over the coming months and years. Very much like Silvery Tweed, they are always looking to innovate and develop new ranges, which is what makes them so exciting to work with.”
